Thailand Packing List (First-Timers)

Sep 25, 20267 min read

What to actually bring for a first trip to Thailand — and the things you can safely leave at home because they are cheaper to buy there.

01The essentials

Thailand is hot and humid almost everywhere, almost all year. Pack light, breathable clothing and far less than you think you need — laundry is cheap and everywhere.

  • ✓Lightweight cotton or linen clothing
  • ✓One set of temple-appropriate clothes (shoulders and knees covered)
  • ✓Reef-safe sunscreen — expensive and hard to find locally
  • ✓A light rain jacket or poncho in the wet season
  • ✓Flip-flops plus one pair of proper walking shoes
  • ✓A universal adapter (Thailand uses types A, B and C)

02Leave it at home

Toiletries, beach towels, cheap clothing and umbrellas are all easy and cheap to buy once you arrive. Heavy jackets and jeans are rarely worth the suitcase space.

The exception is medication. Bring what you need in its original packaging, with a prescription if it is something unusual.
